One of the cool things about conventions and expos is both the ability to see new products AND sample them. Level Foods provided free samples of their fast acting glucose gel. Their gel is a bit unique when compared to others.
First, it is packaged in a pouch as opposed to a tube. The way the pouch is designed is so that the gel will come out a central spigot similar in size to the tip of a glucose tube. This allows for controlled administration as opposed to just dumping the the pouch down someone’s gullet and compromising the airway.
The next stand out for Level Foods are the flavor options they offer. Traditionally oral glucose comes in grape, cherry, and the most dreaded of them all… lemon. The glucose gel from Level Foods comes in four distinct flavors: Vanilla, Strawberry Banana, Mandarin Orange, and Caramel. For taste testing purposes I tried the Strawberry Banana and it honestly was pretty good. My only regret is that I hadn’t picked up some Caramel to try out… I imagine it rocks over ice cream.
The final stand out for Level Foods is the price. Traditional oral glucose tubes like Glutose 15 gm Oral Glucose Gel, One Dose Tube With LEMON Flavour cost on average $12 for 3 and usually have an 8-12 month shelf life. Level Foods is offering the same amount of oral glucose in 3 pouches for the price of $2.85 with an 18 month shelf life.
What’s the one drawback? The one drawback is that Level Foods is only selling their 3-Pouch pack in cases of 12 and have a two case minimum. While large services that use and order large quantities of glucose gel won’t blink at the per-requisite, smaller services may. I think it’s important for those services to look at the fact they will no longer be serving their diabetics lemon and the 300% cost savings to realize that it’s worth it.
