Happy EMS Week!!!
This year the organizers of EMS Week over at the American College of Emergency Physicians has made 2015’s theme EMS Strong. What’s interesting about this theme (and different about this year) is that it isn’t really new. In October of LAST YEAR I appeared (or at least my voice was heard) on EMS Week Goes Year-Long EMS Strong and MedicCast Episode #406 with Jamie Davis alongside Greg Friese. You can see the video version right here or download the audio file at the show page.
During the episode I share some of my concerns with this type of theme… and honestly I still have them. I don’t view this as a very good theme for EMS to adopt. Honestly, aside from the initial big deal and launch until now, there really hasn’t been much hype about it or at least not from what I’ve seen.
EMS Week always seems to be one of those things that highlights the philosophical fracturing of EMS. There are those agencies who will highlight the actions and deeds of their personnel for their peers and communities to recognize. There are those services who will use the opportunity to create stronger bonds with their communities to improve the perception and understanding of EMS. There are those who will provide malnourishment at every opportunity between the hours of 9 and 5, forsaking those that work before and after while also probably saving them from an angioplasty sooner rather than later. There are those who will discard the idea of “EMS Week” and instead transform it into “Employee Appreciation Week” so that everyone feels that they are taking part, while those who actually perform the EMS function are relegated to just another “Employee” as they are every other week of the year. I don’t see strength in this philosophical division of what EMS Week should be for, so again the theme seems to be moot.
I hate to be that pessimistic voice in the back of your head this week… but this is just how I’m seeing it.
