On May 1st the Fire Department of New York‘s (FDNY) Bureau of Emergency Medical Services revealed their 2014 EMS Week Poster.
This year’s EMS Week theme, as selected by the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), is “Dedicated. For Life.” This year’s poster depicts a patient (in real life a FDNY EMT) in cardiac arrest with a FDNY EMT performing CPR compressions while a FDNY Paramedic attempts to intubate. The personnel chosen for this year’s poster are Paramedic Jessica DeResto, EMT Elvis Velez and EMT David Weissman. The poster also sets a FDNY Ambulance behind the scene with a gradient background.
Now I’ll be absolutely honest (which I may be a little too much, but whatevs), a wasn’t happy a few years ago with the revisionist history they tried to portray in 2011 and the 2013 poster was such a bland attempt that I couldn’t even be bothered to post about it. However the 2012 poster was for the most part kick ass with a single powerful image I liked even though it was a bit of a faceless entity. So to keep with that pattern, I should have at least liked if not loved this year’s poster. So this leaves me with only one question… who did the FDNY EMS Week 2014 Poster in MS Paint?
It must have been Rogue Medic.
No, seriously, that poster is horrendous. Anyone who says it “looks great” or is “good” is just paying lip service because it says FDNY on there. Not only is that gradient background jarring but the vehicle is over bearing on what should be the focus of EMS Week… the provider.
There is a specific reason I make the recommendations I do regarding Facebook Page Cover Photos… because it works. I specifically recommend to use a photo of your personnel instead of your apparatus because that will help connect your community to your agency. Up until this year, even in the bad ones, FDNY had done a good job of doing that much even if it had other issues.
So yeah, FDNY EMS Week 2014 Poster, not a fan.
