While at EMS World Expo I had the opportunity to meet up with Jason Friesen, the founder of Trek Medics International about his organization’s efforts in creating a 9-1-1 dispatch solution for areas of the world where there isn’t one.
In these areas where traditional radios do not necessarily function, there is a proliferation of cell phones. The solution, called BEACON, integrates a call center CAD system along with two way SMS communication to responders who are “logged in” and dispatched to calls that are received. Although it may seem archaic in comparison to some of the systems we use in the United States, BEACON represents an affordable and simple method for areas that lack the resources we often take for granted.
Check out this short video to see the system in action:
Trek Medics International is currently running an indiegogo campaign to help finance the development of the system into a deployable model. They have a number of really cool rewards that you can check out at the BEACON indiegogo campaign.
