Last night FDNY EMS EMTs Yari Arroyo and Monique Williams were responding to a medical emergency when they were alerted to an individual riding on the rear of their vehicle. The crew left the vehicle to confront the man who was unsafely aboard the vehicle.
The man, Jose Gonzalez, forced his way into the cab and used the vehicle to injure EMT Williams and murder EMT Arroyo.
The savage was detained on the scene by an off-duty MTA police officer and is in custody. He has been charged with murder, grand larceny, and operating a motor vehicle while impaired.
EMTs are heroes who help countless New Yorkers every day. Tonight's tragedy in the Bronx is horrible.
My deepest sympathies to the family.

No one leaves their home to go on tour thinking that today may be the last time we do so. Nevertheless the risk and the danger is there, possibly lurking around the very next corner, and we must be cognizant of the threat at all times.
There is nothing we can do or say to make any of this easier. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, partners, and co-workers of EMT Arroyo during this terrible time. Know that you are not alone in your grief, and her memory will be carried with all those who put on the uniform and render care to those in need.
