Fox 5 DC is reporting that the DC Fire and EMS (FEMS) medical director, Dr. Jullette Saussy, has resigned from the department seven months after her appointment.
Her resignation letter is available on Scribd:
Washington DC has been besieged with communication issues, fleet problems, elongated response times, and poor leadership over the last few years. A plan to offload low priority call volume to private ambulances has been cleared to proceed, but has not been implemented.
In Dr. Saussy‘s letter she cites the following key reasons for her decision:
- The culture is anti-EMS
- Refusal to measure true performance
- A lack of accountability
- A lopsided organizational chart
- A lack of commitment to EMS education and operations
It is unfortunate that Washington DC has lost the services of Dr. Saussy. Who they will be able to lure in to replace her has yet to be announced.
