Yesterday I had the opportunity to listen to EMS Leadership Episode 59: What’s Up In May? The episode featured host Chris Cebollero having a lengthy discussion with Pam Lane who is the Executive Director of National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT).
NAEMT has long been an organization known for their education initiatives to improve patient care. Their most recent addition is not an educational course focused on the patient, but rather is on EMS Safety. They have also expanded their scope to include a more active role of advocacy through hosting EMS On The Hill Day and in establishing state level advocacy networks. Some of the things Pam mentioned NAEMT was working on is designing a “Near Miss” online system for EMS, establishing fitness guidelines for EMS personnel, and continuing to work for a better organized EMS Week starting with their new website EMS Week Ideas.
Now those of you who know me for a long time have at some point heard me rant and rail against NAEMT for a variety of different reasons over the years and so this post may surprise you. It will absolutely shock those of you to know that I am actually a paying member of NAEMT now. I even have a six digit membership number to prove it. Why the shift in belief?
Although it’s true I became a member back in March at one of my former partners behest, I think Pam Lane summed the changes I’ve seen up nicely when she said during the podcast, “NAEMT is on the move. NAEMT is leading the way. We are no longer taking a backseat to anyone in the EMS community.”
Finally. An organization focused on EMS with some cojones! That’s an organization I can get behind (even though they continue to lack behind in Social Media) because at least they are progressing forward.

I’ll believe it when I see it. I left NAEMT a few years ago and blogged about my reasons at the time. Pam Lane saying they are doing something is a far cry from them actually doing something.
When they actually accomplish something that benefits the ordinary EMT or medic working on the street, I’ll be enthusiastic. Until then, I’ll be skeptical.
