Hopefully you endured the full contact action on Black Friday and haven’t yet developed carpal tunnel from the furious clicking of Cyber Monday. Along the way to the big screen television, blu-ray player, and brand new BMW did you happen to get anything for that EMSer in your life? No?!?
Well luckily I have here a list of five gift ideas for that EMT or Paramedic that is readily available online! Do your favorite life saver a favor and check them out:
The WANTYNU ( We Ain’t Nothing ‘Til You Need Us ) Oxygen Wrench is a one of a kind tool that can only be purchased through WANTYNU.com. The newest model is the TK3 that in addition to being an oxygen tank opener features a window punch, bottle opener, and a nice lightweight design. I’ve used a lot of different oxygen wrenches over the years but this is definitely my favorite one for both its effectiveness and the multi-purpose capabilities in a small lightweight package that is easily clipped to my side. If you’re worried about it getting stolen, just order the Neon Pink one…

Often singled out as the inspiration to those grizzled veterans is the television series Emergency! What better way to either start a new generation or rekindle that spark of enthusiasm for EMS than with Emergency! Season One? Follow the adventures of Roy DeSoto and Johnny Gage as they pioneer on the small screen what many of us take for granted as routine in real life!

Whether you are a twenty year veteran or an EMT who still has a card with wet ink this is the mandatory reading that your instructor forgot to mandate. A Paramedic’s Story: Life, Death, and Everything in Between
is written from the perspective of Steven “Kelly” Grayson, whom you might also know as the EMS Blogfather and author of The Ambulance Driver Files. The book is riveting and offers a true value in wisdom on the realities of the work we actually perform that you will never get from a class.

Mother, Jugs & Speed
stars Bill Cosby, Raquel Welch, and Harvey Keitel as an ambulance crew who embody the wild west mentality of the industry and do some pretty hilarious things in order to help people in need. This comedy came out on the big screen four years after Emergency! had already taken America by storm in living rooms across the nation and brought some humor, along with some of the harsh realities, to the fledgling industry.

While most of my partners chose to wore a bullet proof vest in the South Bronx, I usually preferred an EMS Prayer T-Shirt
or one of a dozen other designs like the Absolute EMT T-Shirt
. It wasn’t a protection or a safety thing, because I’m a big believer that when it’s time to clock out there’s nothing that’s going to stop it, but rather a comfort thing. Who wants to be uncomfortable working a full blown arrest in the stairwell of New Jack City? I really became a fan because they actually come in my size… triple chunk.
Got any suggestions to add to the list? Let me know!

Dave, surprised you didn’t put the full DVD Boxed set for Trauma on your list.
I have one thing I’d like to add. When it comes to books, I always recommend reading “EMT: Beyond the Lights and Sirens” by Pat Ivey (link: http://www.amazon.com/EMT-Beyond-Lights-Pat-Ivey/dp/0759298076/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1291205726&sr=8-1) A great read and well written by someone who stumbled into the field and ran with it.
